What is Dowsing?
Albert Einstein, convinced of the authenticity of dowsing, said, "I know very well that many scientists consider dowsing as they do astrology, as a type of ancient superstition. According to my conviction this is, however, unjustified. The dowsing rod is a simple instrument which shows the reaction of the human nervous system to certain factors which are unknown to us at this time."
Some Dowsing Tools:
Traditional forked stick method: The dowser holds the branch parallel to the ground by the top of the Y shape, then walks over the area to be probed. When the dowser passes over the sought object, the end of the branch is drawn down, pointing to the spot at which the object can be found.
L-shaped metal rods, one held in each hand parallel to the ground and parallel to each other. In this case, when the dowser passes over the sought object, the rods either swing apart or cross each other.
Map dowsing with a pendulum: Dowsers know they have located the target area when the pendulum begins to move in a circle or back and forth.
You can do kinesiology with your hands to get answers. Often called muscle testing.
You can sense energies with your whole body. As a life long nature explorer, this is my favorite practice such as when seeking the right place for a vision quest circle. Ever had your hand drawn instinctively to just the book you needed?
Some Navajo healers do hand trembling to sense energies and imbalances in the patient. Similarly western world energy work practitioners have highly developed abilities to sense energies with their hands.
Chinese engraving 147 BC shows Emperor Yu (2200 BC) holding an instrument shaped like a tuning fork. The inscription says: “Yu, of the Hia dynasty, was famous for his knowledge of the presence of mineral deposits and sources; he could find concealed objects; he was able by his expertise to adapt the operation of the field according to the different seasons.”
I believe dowsing is as ancient and humankind!

Dowsing is an ancient art and science for finding things and solving problems.
Dowsing is a divinatory technique that attempts to get information by interpretating the movement of a dowsing device or the extra sensorial perception in the body.
Dowsing tools come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The most common are L Rods, Y Rod or forked stick, and pendulums or bobbers. Any object hung from a piece of string is a pendulum and an old wire coat hanger can be cut and bent into a L-rod. Learning how to dowse does take practice. Important skills for successful dowsing are concentration, intention, grounding, and intuitive listening. The core of the skill is clearing the mind and asking a series of clear specific questions. There are dowser clubs all over the US where you can learn from experienced practitioners.
Dowsing is a specific techinique, which in a skilled practioner's hands, answers known by the innate sense are depicted via the movement of the tool. No one really knows exactly how dowsing works. Some theorize there is a psychic connection established between the dowser and the sought object. Quantum phsyics has verified of cellular level connection of organisms to each other. It is a kind of electro-magnetic reception similar to the senses that animals rely on for finding direction when migrating or locating each other.
All things, living and inanimate, the theory suggests, possess an energy force. The dowser, by concentrating on the hidden object, is somehow able to tune in to the energy force or "vibration" of the object which, in turn, forces the dowsing rod or stick to move. The dowsing tool may act as a kind of amplifier or antenna for tuning into the energy.
Dowsing is an ancient practice -- thought to date back at least 8,000 years. Wall murals (estimated to be about 8,000 years old) in theTassili Caves of North Africa depict tribesmen surrounding a man with a forked stick, possibly dowsing for water.
Artwork from ancient China and Egypt depict people using forked tools -- perhaps dowsing. Biblical Moses and Aaron used a "rod" to locate water. During the Middle Ages dowsers in Europe used it to help find coal deposits. During the 15th and 16th centuries, dowsers were accused of witchcraft which is likely the origin of the word water witching.
Dowsing in recent decades has been used to find water for wells, mineral deposits, oil, buried treasure, archaeological artifacts, and missing people.
